This is because so many of the late summer perennials and textural grasses emulate the natural planting on vast wild Prairies. These look wonderful right through until autumn.

Late Summer Colour

It's a riot of colour on the nursery with late summer perennials. There are so many herbaceous perennials that you could be adding to your borders to keep that explosion of colour going.

Perovskia 'Blue Spire'

I absolutely love these spires of blue echoing through a border. If you can give it a well drained sunny position you are on to a winner.

Hydrangea Paniculata Limelight

 

Hydrangea paniculata Limelight is one of the stars of the garden perhaps even a celebrity. This is particularly noted for it’s white to lime green blooms which dissolve into the softest tissue paper pink. It also looks good in death which is not something we can say about all shrubs. I like to enjoy the fading flower heads through winter.

Hydrangea arborescens Annabelle

 

This is the shrub of the month. How could it not be the hydrangea arborescens Annabelle. The most beautiful shrub with with huge voluptuous white flower heads.

These large hydrangeas must be one of the late summer highlights. This is Annabella (main picture) which is an arborescence species meaning tree It can grow to 2.5m it is by far the biggest.

Ceanothus The Perfect Evergreen

 Who hasn't fallen for this amazing evergreen. Ceanothus are just flowering spectacularly this year.

It is a versatile genus of plants producing wall shrubs, bushes and ground cover. So many are evergreen with the beautiful blue flowers.

Give them a warm sunny well drained spot.

Syringa vulgaris Sensation is a Stunner

I've said a lot about lilac recently but I was in the large deciduous shrub beds yesterday and this one has a white trim to the blossom. It is just stunning. It is called Syringa vulgaris Sensation. Quiet an appropriate name.
