March Gardener’s Calendar

March is the month the garden really wakes up. The spring primroses are gorgeous, lots of bulbs are coming through there is some early blossom on the tree. Daphne odora will bless us with its fragrance, magnolias will look their best, camellias are out now. Many alpines are out in flower and they look so pretty. It's a great month. Everything is fresh.

February Gardener's Calendar

Spring is coming. Snowdrops are just in flower. Daffodils are opening soon and the hellebores look stunning. It is time to get back out in the garden.

January Gardener's Calendar

As real winter hardy gardeners we know there are some very beneficial outdoor hands on winter jobs from which your garden will truly benefit this month. Many suggested gardening task lists may seem limited to preparatory jobs and whilst these are important, I urge you to get your wellies on grab a spade and show that wheelbarrow some action. A gardeners work is never done. 

We have had the shortest day so herald spring is on its way and lets be ready.

• Its a very good time to plant hedges, trees, shrubs and fruit. To give your garden the very best head start continue the tradition of autumn planting and plant as much as possible now. Planting in autumn conditions is recommended because the ground is favourable and if we establish plants now we can enjoy them next year. Plants benefit from having time to create a solid root system through autumn, winter and early spring, when they are not under pressure to flower and produce leaves. Work now while the soil is still warm and moist and not yet frozen. And don't forget to get your spring bulbs in.

July Gardener's Calendar

 Take steps to prevent your pots and garden getting tired and loosing vigour whilst working hard to delight. A little chopping, snipping and feeding should encourage your annuals and herbaceous to carry on flowering late into the year.

Autumn has arrived and it's traditionally time for autumn planting. Its also the best time to reposition plants in your garden and of course get your spring bulbs in the ground. It's also time to plant your fruit bushes and trees.

Chop back your perennials if you let them go to seed they will not produce a second flush of colour .

Now the soil has had some moisture we can start to think about planting some summer shiners to fill the gaps.
