Hedging Brochure 2020-202

Hedging Brochure

2020-2021 Season

Preston Bissett Nurseries & Country Shop Ltd

Hedges act as wind and sound breaks, whilst feeding and sheltering many species of wild life. They are economical too since there durability to the elements and life span far exceeds fences and walls. Hedges can also be beautiful, reflecting the seasons and providing a canvas to enhance other plants.

When choosing the species you may want to consider:

·                     One variety or mixture of species?

·                     Formal or informal?

·                     Dwarf or Tall?

·                     Evergreen or deciduous?

·                     Edible fruits?

·                     Is it to be a strong boundary to hold live stock at bay?

·                     Is the site exposed?

Hedging plants are available here at the nurseries. We have evergreen hedging in pots all year round but from November to April we also provide bare root hedging.

This brochure contains all you need to know about the hedging we stock, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Carpinus Betulus (Hornbeam)

Ideal where a fairly wide hedge is required. It copes well in clay or chalk soils. Autumn leaves usually remain attached until spring so it still provides a barrier or winter screening . Catkins appear in late spring followed by clusters of winged nutlets. One of the very best hedging choices similar to beech but retaining cover longer. Prune in late summer to make sure that leaves are retained for winter.
Planting distance:  For hedges 3ft (90cm) upwards. Plant 9-18ins (23-45cm) apart or for a denser or stock-proof hedge plant in a staggered double row with 15ins (38cm) between rows and 18ins (45cm) between plants.

Fagus Sylvatica (Green Beech)

A golden brown native hedge. Easy to maintain as a formal boundary with regular clipping. The leaves persist quite well through the autumn and into the winter. Slow to establish and does not establish well in wet heavy ground but it is great in all other situations and it tolerates alkaline soil. It certainly makes one of the best hedges around. Equally good we have copper beach or purple beech a cultivar of common beech. Hedge trim July or August.

Planting distance: For hedges 3ft (90cm) upwards. Plant 9-18ins (23-45cm) apart or for a denser or stock-proof hedge plant in a staggered double row with 15ins (38cm) between rows and 18ins (45cm) between plants.

Planting guide

If possible, get the preparation done before the winter planting season - while the weather and soil is still warm - clear all weeds at least 30cms on both sides of the proposed hedge line.

Dig a trench
at least 45cm (18in) wide and 30cm (1ft), then prick the sides and bottom of the trench with a garden fork so that the roots can establish.

Enrich the soil with organic matter t
o improve the structure of the soil If the soil has poor drainage add sharp sand or coarse grit (make sure it is lime-free). If the soil is heavy clay take care not to create a solid basin at the base of the trench that will stop the water from draining freely. If using RootGrow (which we strongly recommend follow instructions on the sachet

Water the plants and allow them to drain and also fill the planting hole with water and allow it to drain away (water is the secret to success!). If you are using bare roots, it's a good idea to stand them in a bucket of water for an hour before planting.

Gently tease the roots of pot grown plants and plant them (at the same depth as they were in the pot) into the trench, or in the case of bare root and root-balled plants, plant to the damp line on the main stem where you can see they were previously planted in the fields.  Firm the soil to eliminate air pockets. It's really important that there are no air pockets because this is how frost damage is caused

Water each plant with approximately one full watering can per plant or more for plants over 1m tall.
For all plants it is essential that they are kept well watered during their first year even in winter when they are dormant. As a guide, in dry weather at least two gallons (10 litres) of water per square metre should be applied twice a week. Also, it is advisable to spray over the foliage of evergreens in the evenings as well as watering.

Keep the whole area clear of weeds and grass for at least 2 years.

In the first year plants often come into leaf and flower much later than established plants and it should not be assumed that the plants have failed should they be late into leaf. Evergreen shrubs may drop their leaves when transplanted, they should re-grow new shoots within three months of planting.
