Nadina The Heavenly Bamboo

We have whole bed dedicated to nandina because they have a lot to offer particularly in autumn, winter.
Nandina is a shrub that has interest all year round. Its common name is Heavenly Bamboo, and it looks like a little bit like a bamboo though it is not.It is more closely related to berberis. The berries are used  I believe to celebrate Japanese new year and thought to bring good fortune.

Pruning usually involves cutting the old stems at ground level rather than chopping the top.

It doesn’t matter what season we always seem to be showing this shrub off. It has foliage, blossom, and often berried interest. Nandina domestica Obsessed has been a regular garden shrub for many years but some of the new varieties are less familiar. Each have their merits such as richer foliage, deeper foliage, or more compact growth. Summer Sunset and Flirt are two new unfamiliar varieties to me. Summer sunset foliage displays intense red tones to the youngest foliage and stems turning glowing shades of orange that gradually fade to older dark green leaves these then turns the deepest purple in autumn winter. It grows to about 1.5m. Flirt could be very handy if you only have a small space reaching a compact 50cm. Both have red foliage, blossom and berries.

Nandina domestica Obsessed:

Red foliage, white blossom followed by red berries, height 60-70cm.
Nandina domestica Curly Obsessed:
This is similar to Obsessed but has Intense curly red-purple new shoots

Nandina domestica Fire Power:

Dwarf cultivar of Nadina domestica. Usually sits around 45cm though the final hight could be about 0.1–0.5 metres. It has young leaves which are bright-red and yellowish green in summer, becoming orange and red in autumn and winter. In summer they produce small white flowers and later berries.

Nandina domestica Blush Pink:
A sport of Fire Power. This has brilliant foliage. All new growth that opens from dark green in spring is blush pink in colour and this retains its colour not reverting to green. It becomes rich red in summer - right through the season - until autumn when beautiful fiery tones develop, then it turns dark red for winter. It is about 60cm tall.

Nandina domestica Twilight:
Final height 1.2m. Semi evergreen leave begin bright pink when young and mature to green splashed with white.

Nandina domestica Gulf Stream:

1.2m tall. Its foliage is bronze-orange colour in spring turning green with age but often retaining a red-orange flush. In winter it turns shades of red and gold. Long panicles of small white flowers in summer are sometimes followed by red berries

Nandina domestica Flirt:
Compact at 50cm.

Nandina domestica Summer Sunset:

1.5m, deep dark foliage.
