Some of the magnolias are having their moment. I have seen Susan, Stellata, Betty and Genie in flower this week. Lennei, Sunrise, Black Beauty, Pink Beauty, Peachy, Cream, White, Satisfaction, Heaven Scent, and Alba Superba are catching up.
Genie
Nick Bailey has given the genus quiet a lot of coverage on Gardener’s
World in the last year and we have learn that they have a interesting history going
back to dinosaur times. The petals are quiet leathery and were pollinated by
beetles.
They can be grown as a shrub or a tree. Hence the name tulip
tree. I like the fact the hold a good structural silhouette even when they are
not flowering. They do prefer a more neutral to acid soil. I have seen them growing in gardens round here quiet successfully. There is a lovely one in Twyford and in a friend’s
garden in Finmere.
Genie is a hybrid of Magnolia soulangeana and Magnolia
liliiflora and one of the most successful new varieties because it does not get
too big and the colour is amazing. Deep rich magenta red and a final height of approximately
4m by 1.5m.
