These
terracotta bowls made by Yorkshire Flower Pots look great planted for
Autumn/Winter and Spring /Summer interest. We have used small evergreen
shrubs, grasses, ferns herbs violas, perennials and bulbs. In the
Autumn/Winter when the bedding is finished we dedicate a poly tunnel to container
plants, so it is easy to find an interesting mix. Many of these are
small evergreens with interesting foliage because foliage can be just
as attractive and colourful as flowers and more dependable.
Alternatively we can plant in wicker baskets, zinc buckets and reclaimed enable for a vintage or Provence look. Old milk churns and Lancashire chimney pots can also bring some character to your planting.
Crates make interesting planters.
Planting doesn't need to be complicated often one well chosen variety can provide lots of interest. In this pot below from Alan Titchmarches Beach meats land garden at Chelsea 2014 he has planted this beautiful Yorkshire flower pot with thrift an evergreen alpine which has a very grass like appearance. It was historical used as carpet in Medieval times. The pink flower should last particularly if it is dead headed. When planting herbs and alpines mix half grit with your compost to ensure good drainage.
Sometimes its good to have containers planted to climb an obelisk at eye level rather than something you look down on. I would recommend 2 seasons of clematis such as Early Sensation, Avalanche or Cartmanii Joe mixed with a herbaceous clematis like Princes Diana below.
